Riddles of Jane Austen A great English writer of the early 1800's, Jane Austen wrote many great novels we still discuss to this day. The thing that she is most wellknown for is her critique of women's status in her time and their need to get married. The novels she is most wellknown for are 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Mansfield Park', and 'Sense and Sensibility'. This variety of novels made her very successful during her time and she is still studied in classrooms everywhere. Although most people know her for her books she also had a very strong collection of poetry. A lot of her poetry came in the form of charades. Even though we now think of charades as being a game in which you act out clues for people to guess, they used to also have the meaning of a riddle that describes the answer syllable by syllable. These riddles are especially fun because you have several tasks. First you must figure out each separate syllable then you have to fit them together to create a single term. Jane Austen's thoughts about the women of her time dictate a majority of all of her writings. Even though many of her works can be hard to directly associate with her feminist views of the world, most of them have to do with gender in some way. Her riddles in particular almost always discuss gender or include gender in some way, even though it isn't always perfectly apparent what she is trying to say about it. Not all of her riddles have solutions printed, but most of them do have solutions. These riddles have more meaning then what they directly say, they also add meaning to language. These riddles bring to light the fact that words can have social meaning and not just what the dictionary says they should mean. In addition to each separate word's meaning, by breaking them up into syllables it adds more meaning to the word by focusing on its roots. These separate syllables can be described in ways that have implications on the final solution, adding a lot of meaning. A great charaderiddle created by Jane Austen goes as follows: "When my first is a task to a young girl of spirit, And my second confines her to finish the piece, How hard is her fate! but how great is her merit If by taking my whole she effects her release!" The answer to this riddle is hemlock or hemlock. The charade is fun to solve, but it also discusses gender and has social implications. By making the word hemlock into the separate words hem and lock, it implies that the separate words are related to the entire word hemlock. This combinations of syllables could mean a series of things with regards to the whole, the word hemlock. Jane Austen was a great author in her time and is still very appreciated today for her great literature and all she contributed to women's rights. Even though the world has changed a lot since her life, her literature is still very relevant and powerful. Understand The Pros And Cons of a Custom Tattoo Design Contest Today you see tattoos nearly everywhere. Many people, particularly the younger generation, wear one. With so many variations and designs, getting a custommade tattoo is still gaining popularity. Tattoo design contests are becoming popular for people who want a oneofakind design. These contests are being offered by websites which serve as platforms for tattoo enthusiasts and artists alike. But what are the pros and cons of a custom tattoo design contest? Hosting your own contest is not always a winwin situation; but to start with, let us explain you the advantages. As with any custom tattoo design contest, you get a say about what you like in your own custom tattoo design. The artist just provides the technical details, but you can modify their creation through feedback. So it gives you more control of the situation. Because it is offered online, you have access to artists around the globe who can give you high quality work. It can save you time in that you will not need to go from one tattoo parlor to another, just to find the perfect tattoo designer. The artist or designers are the ones who will come and offer their services to you. And you will have the perfect tattoo design at a very low price. But what are the disadvantages of these contests? Though it is costeffective there are sites that have hidden costs, so be aware of them before hosting your own contest. There are also those who participate in the contest who are not real tattoo artists but only designers. Tattoos are a different form of art, so be very careful who you choose. Are there pros and cons for tattoo designers, too? The truth is that if you are a beginner in the business, this contest will serve as experience for you. Not only that, chances are other clients may hire you, winner or no winner. Sometimes tattoo parlors are looking for new artists for their shops. For seasoned artists, well, this is more of a fun way of showing how good you are and that you are up to the challenge of creating new tattoo designs. You can gain a lot of knowledge and get the edge over other artists. What about the disadvantages to artists? For one thing, you have no copyright and ownership of your work. The ownership will be given to the host of the contest and the owners of the site. So, the site has the right to display your work and can be used by anyone. Secondly, there is no remuneration. Because this contest is open to all designers around the world, there would be a number of entries submitted, but only one winner will be awarded the prize. So your chances are about 1%; a real challenge to anyone, especially to newbies in the business. Since your creations are on display, anyone can copy them and put a new twist on them, making them their own creation. This is a high risk that one has to take. Moreover, though it is free to join the contest, there are also instances that the prize is not totally guaranteed if the host decides to back out or vanish for some reason. So, if you are considering hosting or joining a contest, the above mentioned are just some of the pros and cons of the business. As with having a tattoo, the risk, the responsibility, your readiness for all eventualities, and your commitment, is on the line. Think hard before making a decision; no one is forcing you to do it.
